Hannover’s hope Sven Kiene starts at the Ironman in Hawaii

On the way to Hanover: Here Sven Kiene from 96 goes on the bike course at the Wasserstadt-Triathlon.

Sven Kiene, 96, is Hanover’s flagship at the Ironman in Hawaii: he climbs the 3.8 kilometers into the Pacific Ocean, drives the 180 kilometers through the lava landscape and then runs the marathon.

Hanover. The Hawaii Ironman is the Mecca of endurance triathletes – twice this year. It was canceled for two years, in May there was only one substitute race in Utah (USA). “It was also a wonderful nature experience, but it’s not Hawaii,” says Christian Haupt, who has already become amateur world champion in Hawaii and knows the atmosphere in Kona.

So many postponed their difficult starting place from the two previous years until autumn 2022 in the original. To accommodate the approximately 5000 beginners, the race was divided into two. On Thursday, the professional women and some of the many age group athletes will start in pursuit of the world championship titles, followed on Saturday by the professional men and the rest of the amateurs.
