Alex Zanardi, 53, is in intensive care again. Tuesday, after more than a month of hospitalization in Siena (Italy) and while the doctors had put an end to his artificial coma, he was transferred to a specialized center for functional rehabilitation. On June 19, the athlete was seriously hit in the head in an accident while driving his handcycle. He crashed into a truck and suffered from numerous fractures to his face.
“Faced with the instability of the clinical conditions of the patient Alex Zanardi […] it was decided to transfer it […] in the intensive therapy department of the San Raffaele hospital in Milan, ”wrote in a statement the director of the Como hospital, on which depends the rehabilitation center where Zanardi had been admitted on Tuesday.
Before becoming a handisport legend, the native of Bologna traveled the paddocks. In 2001, the former Formula 1 driver suffered an amputation of both legs, following a terrible accident during an Indycar championship car race at the German Lausitzring circuit. Converted to handbike in 2007, Zanardi excelled in the discipline by winning the gold medal at the Paralympic Games four times (two in London in 2012 and two in Rio in 2016).
