Greifswald researchers have come to new knowledge about rare cerebral vein thromboses after an AstraZeneca vaccination. They were able to show a certain decrease in antibodies within three months.

The antibodies can trigger these thromboses. This means that people who have one of these rare cerebral vein thromboses after the first vaccination with AstraZeneca can be vaccinated a second time and thus be protected against Covid19. The interval between the second vaccination should only be long enough so that the antibodies are gone.

Result of global importance

In their study, the researchers have shown that those affected are not at risk of developing such thromboses in the long term. This is because the antibodies would only activate the blood coagulation that leads to these cerebral vein blockages for a short time after the vaccination. This finding is important worldwide, because in some countries only so-called adenovirus-based vaccines such as those from AstraZeneca and Johnsen & Johnsen are available.
