At 37 years of age, and after 20 seasons competing, Arjen Robben – now yes – announced his permanent retirement from professional football. The legendary Dutch winger had hung up his boots a couple of years ago, but chose to return. He wanted to close his cycle playing for the club where it all began (Groningen) and, although he had to overcome a serious injury, he succeeded.
Robben’s farewell was made official by the player himself on July 15, 2021, and the messages from his colleagues have not been long in coming. One of the posts More specials came from Iker Casillas, who for many forever marked – not very positively – the sporting career of the Bedum-born.
Yes, the two saves in the final of the World Cup in South Africa 2010. But if Arjen exhibited something along the way, it was his ability to resist and come back from adversity. Robben fell many times, but he also showed the planet how to get up.
From the UEFA Champions League finals lost in 2010 and 2011, to winning the UEFA Champions League and El Treble in 2013 being the protagonist. From Iker Casillas’ saves in 2010, to his memorable 2014 World Cup in which the Netherlands, by the way, gave Spain a historic win.
Iker’s words, we believe, perfectly sum up Arjen Robben’s career. And the bottom of them should serve those who still believe that sport – and life – is only about triumphs.
THE FAREWELL WORDS FROM CASILLAS TO ROBBEN
“In sports you win and you lose. It is not good to get used to winning. It is good to get up after falling. Congratulations on your career friend, Arjen Robben. Good luck in your new stage !! ”.
Undefeated data. Arjen Robben and Iker Casillas were teammates at Real Madrid for two seasons. Together they were Spanish League and Super Cup champions.
Did you know…? Arjen Robben was champion in the Netherlands (PSV), England (Chelsea), Spain (Real Madrid) and Germany (Bayern Munich).
