“Gorillas” on strike! Because an employee of the food delivery service of the same name was fired on Wednesday for being late, the drivers are now on strike.

Dozens of couriers gathered in front of the warehouse on Prenzlauer Allee on Thursday, blocking entrances and exits. They shouted: “We want Santi back.”

But there is more to it than the dismissal of Santiago (28). The employees complain about the working conditions at the Berlin start-up, which developed into a successful company in just a few months and is now expanding worldwide.

A “Gorillas” spokesman confirmed to BZ: “This week, following cases of gross misconduct, the decision was made to terminate an employee’s contract within his probationary period.”

Santiago had been with the company since January. “Yes, I was 45 minutes late that day,” he says, “but I gave notice in good time and apologized.”

The protests are also directed against payment. An employee: “You are enticed with an hourly wage of 12 euros. Then it is said that it is 10.50 euros because that only applies to the first 100 newly hired employees. “

“Gorillas” advertises with express deliveries within ten minutes. Often hard work for the drivers. A courier: “There is a requirement that the backpacks must not be heavier than 10 kilos. But this is not checked at every location. “

The company contradicts: In these cases, the staff in the warehouse is instructed to distribute the order between several drivers “to ensure health and safety”.

Santiago has not yet received a written notice of termination. “Gorillas” did not announce whether he will be reinstated.
