Mark Cavendish won the 3rd stage of the Tour of Italy at Balatonfüred, the last Hungarian stop of the Giro, by settling the sprint of the peloton, still led in the general classification by Mathieu van der Poel.
Faster than Arnaud Démare and Fernando Gaviria, the Briton signed his 16th stage success in the “corsa rosa” after 201 monotonous km around the emerald waters of Lake Balaton before a transfer day on Monday. Neither the Frenchman nor the Colombian could bring up the veteran who will celebrate his 37th birthday in less than two weeks.
“I had to start the sprint 300 meters from the line. I had to stay in front then, I’m happy to have managed to hold on to win”savored Cavendish, winner for the 160th time in the professional peloton.
The “pink jersey” Mathieu van der Poel, “happy to take the stuff to Italy” was not worried but he probably lived his penultimate stage in pink.
