Olympique Lyon have to play their home games in the French upper house of football in front of empty ranks until further notice. The French league association LFP announced on Monday that the “ghost games” would take place until an investigation into the renewed fan violence on Sunday was concluded. After the renewed fan violence in Ligue 1, the interior and sports ministries want to discuss the consequences with associations and clubs on Tuesday.
Sports minister Roxana Maracineanu called for sanctions after the game Lyon against Marseille was canceled on Sunday evening. “What happened in Lyon is unacceptable,” said the minister on Monday. “We cannot allow players to be attacked in this way. Such incidents must at least result in the game being stopped automatically.”
After the French international Dimitri Payet was hit in the head by the throwing of a full water bottle in the game between Olympique Lyon and Olympique Marseille on Sunday evening, the game was initially interrupted and finally canceled after almost two hours. “I think first of the attacked player. Dimitri Payet has my full support,” said Minister Maracineanu.
As the broadcaster RMC Sport reported, Payet wanted to file a complaint against unknown persons because of the attack, his club supported him. The offensive player was not at training on Monday, but had a medical examination with a view to the physical and psychological consequences of the attack, reported RMC Sport.
The league association wants to announce the definitive consequences of the incident on December 8th. It is also about the evaluation of the canceled game.
