The suspect, Christian B., 43, is currently in custody in Kiel, northern Germany, on a separate case.

The German police began, Tuesday, July 28 in the morning, searches in a workers’ garden near Hanover, announced the Braunschweig prosecutor’s office, responsible for the file of the mysterious disappearance of Maddie McCann. “These searches are linked to our investigation into the Maddie McCann case”, said the prosecution, without giving details, while German investigators believe that the young Briton who disappeared 13 years ago is dead. To carry out their searches, the investigators notably use an excavator, according to the local newspaper Hannoversche Allgemeine (in German), which states that the suspect currently in custody had lived in Hanover.

This case has experienced a sudden acceleration since early June with the identification of a new suspect, Christian B., 43, a German repetitive pedophile already convicted of rape in Portugal and currently in detention for another case. The prosecution claimed to hold “evidence or concrete facts” supporting the conviction of the death of the girl but no “forensic evidence” in the sense that for example the remains of the body would have been found.

The suspect, Christian B., 43, was living at the material time a few kilometers from the hotel, in the small Portuguese seaside resort of Praia da Luz, where the child had disappeared. In detention, he had to be placed in solitary confinement to prevent him from being attacked by fellow prisoners. He is suspected of the murder of the little girl, who was on vacation with her parents and their two other children in Portugal at the time of her disappearance. According to his lawyer quoted in the media, the man refutes any involvement in the disappearance of the little Briton.

According to German media, investigators discovered children’s swimsuits in a suspect’s camper van. They also allegedly got their hands on USB keys containing thousands of pedophile images, some of which depict the suspect.
