For the Vienna State Opera, as for practically all cultural institutions, the new lockdown is a major drama – and consequently one is now also relying on one in the Haus am Ring: As in the previous compulsory lockdowns, the State Opera will offer opera friends a little consolation in the coming weeks free streaming service. And it starts right away with the greatest opera drama of all: Richard Wagner’s “Ring des Nibelungen”.
The production of the tetralogy by Sven-Eric Bechtolf can be seen in a performance tranche from 2016 up to and including Thursday. Lighter fare in difficult times will follow on Friday, when Otto Schenk’s interpretation of Gaetano Donizetti’s “L’elisir d’amore” with Valentina NaforniÅ £ ă and Erwin Schrott will be streamed. They will then provide weekly information about the digital schedule for the coming weeks.
A highlight has already been set, namely the new production of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” by star director Barrie Kosky on December 5th. For known reasons, the work cannot premiere in front of a large audience, but it will be shown in front of an even larger audience, namely as a television premiere for ORF III.
“As you can imagine, this situation is a very stressful and difficult one for the entire workforce in the house,” said State Opera Director Bogdan RošÄ ?? iÄ ‡ in a letter to the audience, confused about the recent lockdown. But they will continue to work and rehearse in the next few weeks in order to be ready to play again as soon as possible.
