Pierre Gasly is having a very solid season, especially since the Portuguese Grand Prix, but Franz Tost, his manager at AlphaTauri, reminds us that the Frenchman has been flawless since the start of the season.
“Pierre was very competitive from the start” recalls Tost, who spoke before the Frenchman’s best time during Free 3 this morning.
“If you remember he was fifth in Bahrain in qualifying, but in the race he unfortunately had a collision with [Daniel] Ricciardo. He had lost the front wing, but he was still there. “
“When we had difficulties, there were technical reasons behind it, we couldn’t find the right set-up for the car, either on the tire side or on the aero side, and he couldn’t show the performance.”
“In all the races, Pierre has shown fantastic performances, even in Monaco, and the reason why he could not finish in fifth position is that we had problems heating the hard tires.”
Tost does not question his pilot for this disappointment: “He lost a bit too much lap time then, and Vettel in particular was able to overtake him. But in terms of performance, I have to say he’s doing a really good job.”
