The MP recorded 30 contracts in the Fundão Chamber. Some were not executed and others ended up being made by municipal technicians.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) of the DIAP of Coimbra accused Manuel Frexes, former president of the Fundão Chamber and former PSD deputy, a former director and a businessman of the crimes of malfeasance, economic participation in business, embezzlement and forgery of documents . The former director and another municipal employee were also accused of improperly receiving an advantage. Manuel Frexes says he will prove his innocence in court.
At issue, according to the investigation by the Judiciary Police (PJ) of the Guard, are 30 contracts for works, studies and projects, worth 1.6 million euros, which will have violated public contracting rules. The objective was to benefit three companies managed by businessman Mário Pina Bernardo. According to the indictment, during the 2007 and 2011 mandate, Manuel Frexes used the Autarchy’s coffers to provide a “financial cushion” to his friend’s companies that were suffering from the economic crisis. And, with the help of the then director of the Department of Municipal Works, he resorted to various stratagems to that end.
