The top game in Italy’s Serie A was anything but even: Lazio beat AC Milan 4-0 at home and are now second, just one point behind the Milanese. Goals for the home team came from Milinkovic-Savic, Zaccagni, Alberto and Anderson. (tmu)

Newcastle United have taken a big step towards the final of the League Cup: In the semi-final first leg against Southampton they won almost 1-0 away. Joelinton scored the goal for the guests in the 73rd minute. The Swiss international Fabian Schär was in central defense for 90 minutes at Newcastle. The second leg will take place next Tuesday. (tmu)

An artful shot by Joshua Kimmich saved Bayern from a complete false start to 2023. Four days after the 1-1 draw in Leipzig, the midfielder saved Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Cologne in the 90th minute. Spurred on by the 7-1 win over Bremen, the visitors had hopes of victory for a long time after Skhiri’s early goal (4th minute) before Bayern struck. Swiss national team keeper Yann Sommer put on a solid performance in Bayern Munich’s first home game. The 34-year-old was powerless when he conceded. Especially with deep passes and cross balls, Sommer was there several times and acted safely.

Leipzig, on the other hand, has climbed to second place in the table and has further exacerbated FC Schalke 04’s worries about relegation. The Saxons prevailed 6:1 (4:0) at the bottom of the table. Schalke (with Michael Frey, who provided the assist for the only goal) remain 18, a long way down, after their twelfth loss of the season.

Hertha BSC also lost the second game of the year in a 0:5 (0:3) against VfL Wolfsburg and remains in a direct relegation zone ahead of Schalke. VfB Stuttgart missed out on their first win under Bruno Labbadia, who had returned as coach, in a 2-2 (1-1) win at TSG Hoffenheim after conceding a late goal. The Swabians left the relegation zone for the time being. (dpa/tmu)

Poland’s football association has unveiled former Portugal coach Fernando Santos as the new national coach. “It was a difficult choice, but we chose the best possible coach,” said head of the association Cezary Kulesza in Warsaw on Tuesday. The decisive factor was that Santos already had experience in leading a national team. The 68-year-old Portuguese succeeds Czeslaw Michniewicz, who left Poland’s Football Association in December.

Santos had until recently coached the Portuguese national team. He led the selection for superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to the European title in 2016. At the World Cup in Qatar, the coach had taken Ronaldo out of the starting XI after the preliminary round and received a lot of praise for the decision. After Portugal surprisingly failed at the World Cup in the quarter-finals to outsiders Morocco, Santos stopped as national coach.

Vladimir Petkovic was also shortlisted. In the end, however, the former coach of the Swiss national team had to give way to Santos. (dpa/tmu)

FC Augsburg will have to do without the two offensive players Ruben Vargas (24) and Irvin Cardona (25) in the next few weeks. Vargas tore the membrane between his shin and fibula in the 3-4 win against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, as coach Enrico Maassen reported on Tuesday. He will be absent for two to three weeks. After a foul by Mats Hummels, Vargas was replaced early on by Cardona against BVB. (dpa)

British media call it the “biggest shock” in the 149-year history of the Scottish Football Cup. After sixth-tier FC Darvel’s 1-0 win over first-tier FC Aberdeen, they are full of praise for the blatant outsider.

“The spotlight will be on Aberdeen’s embarrassment but it wouldn’t be fair to Darvel’s side who were just terrific,” the Times wrote. The Guardian said: “Darvel showed courage and determination and much more to achieve this significant victory on the biggest night in the club’s history.”

Darvel had sensationally won 1-0 against Aberdeen in the fourth round of the cup on Monday evening. Jordan Kirkpatrick’s goal came in the 19th minute. Darvel goalkeeper Chris Truesdale had prevented the equalizer with three saves in the second half. A supposed goal for Aberdeen in the 74th minute did not count because of an offside position.

After the game, a state of emergency prevailed in the small town, which is around 20 kilometers south of Glasgow and has only 4,000 inhabitants. Around 3500 people had been in the stadium, including around 2800 from Darvel, celebrating the historic victory. “I need time to digest this,” goalscorer Kirkpatrick told the BBC. “Actually, I have to work tomorrow, I hope I can get time off.” (dpa)

There are quite a few London derbies in the Premier League. Fulham versus Tottenham is one of those and at the end of the 21st round in England, the slightly favored Hotspurs won 1-0 against their city rivals. Once again it was star striker and captain Harry Kane who secured victory for Antonio Conte’s team. The England striker scored in injury time in the first half. Despite their second loss in a row, Fulham are still in 7th place, while Tottenham are in 5th place. (tsi)

In his first official game as captain, Kylian Mbappé made club history at Paris Saint-Germain. In the 7-0 victory of the French champions in the second round of the cup at the lower-league team US Pays de Cassel, the star striker scored five goals in one game on Monday, becoming the first player in his club. The 24-year-old World Cup runner-up scored in the 29th, 34th, 40th, 56th and 79th minute to easily win and qualify for the round of 16. Neymar (33′) and Carlos Soler (64′) scored the other goals. At the end of the 19th round in Serie A, Inter made a big slip in the fight with arch-rivals AC Milan for second place. In the home game against Empoli, the third in the table surprisingly lost 0:1. A goal by Baldazi in the 66th minute decided the game. Inter-Captain Skrinar played a not inconsiderable part in the defeat, the defender had to leave the field before the break with yellow-red. Empoli skillfully used the majority and kept the favorites away from their own goal. Zero Inter shots on target in the 2nd half reflect the strong defensive work of Empolis. The Swiss Nicolas Haas also played his part in the away win, he came on at Empoli at the break.

In the duel between Bologna and promoted Cremonese, Charles Pickel was another Swiss player on Monday evening. The game ended 1:1, Pickel played through. Ex-YB midfielder Michel Aebischer didn’t get a chance at Bologna. (tsi)

Everton FC have separated from their coach Frank Lampard after almost a year. This was announced by the club from the English Premier League on Monday evening. “The commitment and dedication of Frank and his team have been exemplary throughout their time at the club, but recent results and current position in the table made this difficult decision necessary,” the football club said. Along with Lampard, 44, are his assistants Joe Edwards, Paul Clement, Ashley Cole and Chris Jones. Paul Tait and Leighton Baines will oversee the team until a successor is signed. (dpa)

Bayern Munich has parted ways with goalkeeper coach Toni Tapalovic. As the club announced on Monday, the 42-year-old was released with immediate effect. “In particular, differences about the way we work together have now led to us going our separate ways,” said sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. The club did not provide any information about a successor. Tapalovic has been the coach responsible for the goalkeepers at the Bundesliga leaders since 2011 and is considered a close confidante of national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Goalie Alexander Nübel, who was loaned to Monaco by Bayern, recently criticized that there had been very little contact with Tapalovic since he had been playing in France. “During the time I was in Monaco, there wasn’t much contact. Before that we had a normal relationship. I do believe that you could have exchanged views about the situation from time to time, »said Nübel in the «Aktuelle Sportstudio» on ZDF. Salihamidzic then announced: “We will talk about this internally.”

FC Bayern loaned Nübel to the Monegasque in 2021. After Neuer’s end of the season due to a broken leg, the club tried to get the 26-year-old back early, whose loan contract in France runs until the summer. Instead, the Swiss changed last week National goalie Yann Sommer from Borussia Mönchengladbach to Munich. The 34-year-old’s chances of remaining number 1 at Bayern beyond the summer and after Neuer’s return have certainly not decreased with Tapalovic’s dismissal. (dpa)

At the Swiss Football Night on Monday evening in Bern, Granit Xhaka (Arsenal London) and Ramona Bachmann (PSG) were named footballer of the year. Fabian Rieder was also honored twice: The YB youngster won in the category “Super League Player of the Year” and “Youngster of the Year”. Fabienne Humm (FCZ) was voted the best player in the WSL, Brighton Labeau (LS) is Challenge League Player of the Year 2022. (tsi)

After two championship titles and a cup win, Vincent Sierro is leaving the Young Boys after three and a half years and is moving to the French Ligue 1 to Toulouse, the club announced on Monday afternoon. The Bernese gave no information about the transfer fee. YB sports director Steve von Bergen had already indicated a departure at the weekend, Sierro was missing in Bern’s squad for the guest appearance at GC.

The 27-year-old has made 119 appearances (13 goals77 assists) for YB since arriving in Bern in the summer of 2019. Under coach Raphaël Wicky, Sierro also played regularly this season, albeit not always from the start.

Toulouse is the second stop abroad in the career of the former Swiss youth international. In 2017/18 the Valais player was under contract with SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga. There came the central middle field player but only on five missions. (tsi)

In 2021, Amir Abrashi returned to Grasshoppers after five and a half years in the Bundesliga at Freiburg and half a season at FCB, for whom he had played from 2010 to 2015. Since then he has been an important leader in the team and captain. GC announced on Monday that the 32-year-old had extended his contract, which expired at the end of the season, by a year. The 50-times Albanian national player played a total of 185 games for the record champions. (tsi)

England striker Harry Kane is open to another contract extension with his club Tottenham Hotspur, according to a media report. According to “The Athletic”, whether the 29-year-old will extend depends on how the current season ends, whether coach Antonio Conte stays and what the future plans of the north London club look like.

The England international, who has scored 15 goals so far this Premier League season, is under contract until the summer of 2024. Tottenham want to avoid leaving the club on a free transfer. It is therefore considered likely that Kane will either extend or leave the Spurs in the summer. In addition to Bayern, Manchester United is also considered an interested party. (dpa)

Despite the deduction of 15 points in the current Serie A season, Juventus believe they can qualify for the Champions League again. The Italian football record champion relies on a sporting reaction after the verdict of the association sports court for accounting fraud. “We need an extraordinary run, but I’ve already done the math,” said coach Massimiliano Allegri before the league home game against Atalanta on Sunday evening.

After beating Bergamo 3-3, Turin are 14 points behind the Champions League places and 27 points behind leaders Napoli.

“Juventus is like a seven-headed dragon,” wrote captain Leonardo Bonucci on Instagram. “If one is cut off, a new one always appears. Never give up!” The new club president Gianluca Ferrero called on players and coaches to do their sporting job while the club’s leadership fight in court. (dpa)

With a narrow win at home, FC Barcelona has maintained its clear lead in the Spanish league. Without the suspended goalscorer Robert Lewandowski, they managed a 1-0 win against Getafe, who were in danger of relegation.

Pedri scored the goal in the 35th minute for an overall lackluster success. Goalie Marc-André ter Stegen prevented a possible equalizer just before half-time at the Camp Nou and saved again just before the end. The Catalans have now accumulated 44 points from 17 games.

Real Madrid remain in touch with FC Barcelona. Toni Kroos made the decision in the hard-earned 2-0 win at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday evening in the 90th minute with a precise low shot late in the game. Goalscorer Karim Benzema gave the record champions the lead in the 24th minute. The win keeps Real Madrid three points behind leaders Barcelona on 41 points after 17 games. (dpa)

Cristiano Ronaldo has been under contract with al-Nasr since January 1st. If the estimated figures are correct, he collected 12 million euros in the first 22 days in Saudi Arabia, after two and a half years it will be 500 million euros.

On Sunday evening, the Portuguese will be in action for the first time in a competitive game. Al-Nasr welcomes Ettifaq at home, and despite all the excitement about the transfer and the crazy salary of the five-time world footballer, some of the 25,000 seats in the pretty Msool Park remain empty.

In Europe, no major club wanted him anymore, in Riyadh Ronaldo leads his team as captain on the pitch. A few climbers from the striker, who will be 38 in two weeks, are enough to inspire the audience.

In his club career, Ronaldo has struck 701 times in 949 competitive games for Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. At al-Nasr, he doesn’t jump high enough for a quick first goal.

When Al-Sulaiheem crossed in the 31st minute, Ronaldo sprinted in front of goal, but at most touched the ball with the tips of his hair. But behind him, Talisca climbs high enough to score for the lead. The 28-year-old Brazilian, once a junior international in his home country, is a cheap wage compared to CR7. He earns 6.5 million euros per season.

Al-Nasr needs a win to take the lead in the second- or maybe even third-rate Saudi Pro League. Ronaldo smashes a free kick over the goal shortly after the 1-0. It fits his stats: many years ago he was a strong shot, but now his average on standing ball has been far from world-class for years.

But when things get dangerous in this match from the game, Ronaldo is almost always right in the middle. In the second half he prepares a chance with a sprint and a cross. He misses the ball as he makes a spectacular overhead kick. And when the 78th minute is running, Ronaldo fails after a nice dribbling from an acute angle. There is no further excitement, it stays at 1-0. (okay.)

Borussia Dortmund made a successful start to the new football year with a hard-fought victory when Sébastien Haller made his Bundesliga comeback to acclaim after his cancer illness. The Revierclub conceded three goals in the 4: 3 win against FC Augsburg on Sunday, but always came back. Jude Bellingham (30′) and Nico Schlotterbeck (42′) and substitutes Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (75′) and Giovanni Reyna (80′) scored for the hosts.

Arne Maier (40th), ex-St. Galler Ermedin Demirovic (45th + 2) and newcomer David Colina (77th) each scored the equalizer for Augsburg. After the victory on the 16th match day of the Bundesliga, BVB is again hoping for a place in the Champions League. With 28 points, Dortmund are still sixth, seven points behind leaders Bayern Munich. Augsburg slipped to 15th place in the table.

Ruben Vargas had to be substituted early on due to injury. The Swiss player near Augsburg was fouled by BVB defender Mats Hummels after six minutes and left the pitch in tears a little later. The 24-year-old threatens to be out for a longer period of time. National goalie Gregor Kobel played through at Dortmund.

Omlin loses his Gladbach debut

Bayer Leverkusen thoroughly spoiled the Bundesliga debut of Borussia Mönchengladbach’s new regular Swiss goalkeeper Jonas Omlin and shot themselves further out of the relegation zone at the start of the competitive game in the new year. The effective pacemakers of coach Xavi Alonso managed the fourth Bundesliga win in a row and the sixth win in a row against Borussia in a 3-2 win in Gladbach on Sunday.

The final phase was exciting again despite Leverkusen’s 3-0 lead, but Borussia Mönchengladbach did not manage more than the connecting goals by Lars Stindl (82nd minute / 90th + 3). Bayer’s goals from Mitchel Bakker (21st), Amine Adli (43rd) and Nadiem Amiri (67th) made for the worst possible start to the Gladbach era after national goalie Yann Sommer (34) left Bayern Munich. Thanks to the outstanding Erling Haaland, English champions Manchester City have clinched their next clear victory in the Premier League. In the Cityzens’ 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, Haaland scored their fourth hat-trick of the season. The former Dortmund striker is on course for a record in the Premier League.

After Man City struggled for a long time in the first half, Haaland scored the goal for the hosts in the 40th minute. City ruled the game after the break. After a foul on Ilkay Gündogan in the penalty area, Haaland converted the penalty kick again in the 50th minute. A few minutes later, the Norwegian made everything clear for the defending champion with his third goal (54th). After just over an hour, he was substituted to thunderous applause at the Etihad Stadium. Manuel Akanji played through in central defense at City.

Haaland’s record in England so far is breathtaking. Haaland has featured in 19 of 20 league games for Man City this season, scoring 25 goals. Last season, the Premier League’s two top scorers – Mohamed Salah and Heung-min Son – each scored 23 goals in 38 games.

Arsenal win top game against Manchester United

The Cityzens put pressure on leaders Arsenal from London with the comfortable victory. But the Gunners beat Manchester United 3-2 on Sunday night. Bukayo Saka (53′) and Eddie Nketiah (24’/90′) scored in the high-quality game for the leaders. Granit Xhaka played through for the leaders and set up the home team’s first goal. The guests initially took the lead through Marcus Rashford (17th), and Lisandro Martínez (59th) also scored. United are fourth in the table, level on points with third-placed Newcastle. (dpa/tzi)
