At the St-Francis-de-Sales oratory in the city of Saint-Louis, the decision to criminalize abortion is unanimous. The church welcomes every Sunday the community of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, a society of the traditionalist Catholic movement. Mass is celebrated there in Latin and hundreds of faithful attend every week.

Originally from France, Pierre Dumain has been curate for four years in this parish in the south of the city. He shares and teaches his values survive with young people in his community. And his beliefs, he says, go beyond religious tradition: There is the fifth commandment: “Thou shalt not kill”, but it is not because I am Catholic that I do not kill. An atheist does not kill a human being. An embryo is a human being so we don’t kill it he explains.

« Killing a helpless child is the greatest crime. »

In the community, there are many families. In the basement of the church where the faithful gather after mass, it is not uncommon to come across families of 6, 7 or even 12 children. Abortion, for them, is not an option even in the event of rape.

Faced with this question, Pierre Dumain replies that it is not thanks to abortion that we can combat the culture of rape. The first question is why are there rapes? Why is there this lack of respect for women?he argues.

A few miles from the oratory is the only abortion clinic in all of Missouri. At the house of Planned Parenthood Since Friday, anyone who performs a voluntary termination of pregnancy there faces a sentence of 5 to 15 years in prison. Abortion has become a crime punishable by the same penalty as intentional homicide.

From now on, abortions are authorized only in cases where the life of the mother is in danger. The law aims to punish doctors who perform abortions and not their patients.

It’s a shocklance Tania Thomas. I had heard it was being discussed, but I never thought they would take women’s rightscontinues this Quebecer who has lived in the suburbs of Saint-Louis for more than 25 years.

She now fears that elected Republicans will go further. They could very well decide to go after marriage between two people of the same sex or else the other rights to contraceptionsays the mother.

Her daughter, Jade, is also worried. The 25-year-old is an anthropologist and is currently completing a doctorate in medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. His studies led him to work in a clinic helping women victims of domestic violence and the criminalization of abortion will keep women trapped in the circle of violence.

In homes where there is domestic violence, pregnancy is a way of keeping women trapped in this pattern and nothing can stop it anymore.she laments.

« I feel that our future is threatened. »

A quote from Jade Thomas

Back at the Oratory of St. Francis de Sales, Pierre Dumain instead believes that this decision will have a positive effect in the states that will follow the Missouri example. We will see the results in a few years in the States which have prohibited it and those which authorize it. We will see that States, where abortion will remain legal, will collapse […] Without children, the loss of family values will destroy the social fabriche believes.

But for the moment, we have to admit that it is the debate around this law that threatens the social fabric of Missouri.
