First cases of the Delta variant in Portugal associated with travel to India and Nepal

“We believe, according to the epidemiological data we have to date, that the start was associated with a high number of introductions in the Lisbon region, particularly in the Lisbon area”, underlines the microbiologist of the National Health Institute Doctor Ricardo Jorge (INSA).

João Paulo Gomes also considers that the introduction of the Delta variant in Portugal has “little association with the United Kingdom”.

“We have many cases, most of the first recorded cases were associated with travel to India and Nepal, and we know that we have a very relevant Indian community in the center of Lisbon”, adds the microbiologist.

These trips will have been at the origin of “innumerable transmission chains”.

In the Algarve and Lisbon and Vale do Tejo regions, this variant already represents all (100 percent) of the cases of infection.
