Fire in a retirement home in Vienna: man died

A man died in a fire in a pensioner’s house on Rauscherstrasse in Vienna-Leopoldstadt on Saturday night. The fire had broken out in the man’s apartment. The fire investigators from the Vienna State Criminal Police Office were on site on Saturday morning.

Shortly before midnight, the apartment building’s automatic fire alarm system reported a fire in a residential unit. The Viennese professional fire brigade then triggered alarm level 2, 66 emergency services were on duty.

With breathing masks, the firefighters penetrated the smoky area with an extinguishing line, searched the apartments and fought the flames. One resident could only be found dead.

Around 30 people were taken outside by the emergency services with escape filter masks, six of them were cared for on an outpatient basis by the professional rescue service.

The cause of the fire was initially unclear.
