Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola praised his team’s performance and the brilliance of Leicester City’s goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel at the end of the two teams’ confrontation, which ended with the Manchester Blue winning 1-0 in the fourth week of the Premier League.
“It’s a difficult stadium to go to and we know that,” Guardiola told BBC Sport after the match. “Leicester have taken a step forward to be among the top teams in the league.”
“We did a lot of good things. During the match we found spaces and made them run a lot. We know how dangerous Jimmy Vardy and also Harvey Barnes are in the transitions. The players managed to maintain their focus.”
Guardiola added, “Kasper Schmeichel is a great goalkeeper and that’s why things like this happen. The good thing is how many chances we created. Of course we would have liked to score more goals, and we deserved it.”
He explained, “The last 11 goals for the team were scored by 9 different players, I think. We don’t have a real striker, so we do it as a team.”
In a subsequent statement to “Sky Sports”, the Spanish coach said: “An excellent match. We played well from the first minute. After the international break, we always had doubts, but we were at the required level for the third week in a row.”
Guardiola praised the performance of Danish goalkeeper Schmeichel, saying, “What can I say? The goalkeeper is the best player in Leicester because we have done a lot of good things. You have to be patient in facing them because they are very dangerous when they attack, so it is difficult to control them.”
Guardiola also praised the winner of the winning goal, Bernardo Silva, saying: “He’s back at his best technical and mental levels. He’s an exceptional player and we know that.”
“I’m happy with the three points and the performance. Leicester, as in recent years, fight to the end. I’m satisfied. If you score or shoot I don’t know how many times, it’s because you’ve done very good things. Schmeichel is an amazing goalkeeper and he saved those goals.”
It is noteworthy that Manchester City won its third out of 4 matches in the Premier League so far, to temporarily occupy second place with 9 points.
