Laundrie (23) had returned from the voyage alone on 1 September. Two weeks later, he disappeared after telling his parents that he was going for a hike in a nature reserve.

In late October, after a search, human remains were found in a Florida swamp area not far from his childhood home. Laundrie was identified by his teeth. How he had died was not disclosed at the time.

Laundrie was never charged with the murder of Petito, but was charged with fraud with his fiancé’s bank card.

The case received a lot of attention on social and traditional media in the US and beyond. This led to criticism from many people, who felt that the missing case of a young white woman received disproportionate attention compared to the missing cases of many black women.
