On the occasion of the most important endurance race in the world for competitions reserved for cars derived from the series, the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, Ferrari has unveiled the 296 GT3, which will make its debut in the race starting from the 2023 season with the 24 Hours of Daytona in January. Derived from the road model 296 Gtb, the sports berlinetta with which it shares most of the technical components, the new Ferrari 296 GT3, powered by a 2.9-liter V6 turbo engine with 600 horsepower (a non-electrified powertrain, unlike the road model) takes up the baton of the 488 GT3 which in its career has collected almost 500 victories – and over 100 titles – on international circuits.

FERRARI 296 GT3: THE PROJECT

An innovative project, starting from the choice of the technical components of a car created with the aim of competing in the highest international competitions for the category which, starting from 2023, becomes the absolute reference for the derivatives of the series, as much for the Sprint type races. as for the Endurance. The Ferrari 296 GT3 is equipped with a 6-cylinder 120 ° turbo engine, in a central rear position, which thanks to the positioning of the turbochargers inside the “V” is particularly compact and allows the car’s center of gravity to be lowered, and allows to contain the mass. of the engine itself. The engine, in a more advanced and lower position than that of the road “sister”, does not have an electric unit, as anticipated, in compliance with the technical regulations of the GT3 class. While compared to the “outgoing” car, the 488 (4-liter, 8-cylinder V engine), the new race car benefits from several improvements, in terms of torsional rigidity (+ 10%), intake efficiency, fuel consumption fuel and performance.

FERRARI 296 GT3, HOW IT’S MADE: DESIGN AND AERODYNAMICS

Recognizable from the first glance due to the different stylistic elements that refer to the Ferrari world and the cars in series production, combining sportiness and elegance, starting from the design of the front headlights, the new Ferrari 296 GT3 competition marks a step forward in terms of design compared to the 488. Compared to the latter, thanks to the intense and accurate work carried out in Maranello in terms of aerodynamics – even in the wind tunnel -, the new GT3 registers a 20% increase in terms of load vertical, a 20% reduction in load displacement at the front and 40% at the rear. Numbers that translate, in practice, into a greater balance of the car in adapting to the conditions of the various circuits, and greater driveability for drivers, whether they are professional drivers or gentlemen drivers.

FERRARI 296 GT3, HOW IT’S MADE: MECHANICS AND ELECTRONICS

The new Ferrari 296 GT3, made from a completely new aluminum chassis, combines the 2.9-liter V6 turbo engine – which delivers 600 Hp with a maximum torque of 710 Nm – a transverse “Xtrac” type gearbox with single-plate clutch. 6-speed. Compared to the road version, the Prancing Horse GT3 is characterized by an extended wheelbase and a refined suspension compartment, developed for racing on the track. The double wishbone suspension, both front and rear, and the anti-roll bars, thanks to a wide range of adjustments, allow the teams to manage the tuning of the car in relation to the race circuits. While on the mechanical front there is also the specially enhanced braking system, with 400 mm front discs and newly designed calipers, and the brand new forged rims developed and approved by Rotiform exclusively for the new model. As for the electronics, the new Ferrari 296 GT3 features, among other systems, traction control, Abs, a high-definition rear camera that transmits images on one of the three screens inside the cockpit, providing the driver useful information on potential overtaking by opponents.
