Feminine Roubaix. World champion Elisa Balsamo disqualified for a stuck bottle

Nightmarish day for Elisa Balsamo. After being the victim of two punctures on the women’s Paris – Roubaix, the world champion was disqualified for a stuck bottle and saw her hopes of success dwindle, when she had just entered the peloton.

Clinging to her team car

The Italian stayed too long, according to the race marshals, clinging to her team’s car (Trek – Segafredo).

Balsamo was cited among the favorites of this second edition of the women’s Paris – Roubaix, having notably won the Trofeo Alfredo Binda-Comune di Cittigliola, the Classic Bruges – La Panne and Ghent-Wevelgem. It was ultimately her teammate, Elisa Longo Borghini, who won alone. The Italian, 3rd last year, beat Lotte Kopecky and Lucinda Brand.

“The results of my teammates made my day a little better…”

After having digested this disqualification, the Italian wanted to congratulate and salute the performance of her compatriot on Sunday on Twitter.

“Yesterday was Elisa Longo Borghini’s day with a great victory. All of my teammates had a great race and the joy of their incredible results made my day a little better…we made a mistake and I’m so sorry. It’s time to switch to track mode. The Italian will participate in the Nations Cup on track, in Glasgow, from April 21 to 24.
