Novak Djokovic flies to the Summer Olympics in Tokyo (July 23rd to August 8th). The Serbian Wimbledon winner announced this on Thursday in a video message on Twitter in which he congratulated a Japanese boy on his sixth birthday.
“I can’t disappoint my little friend Koujirou,” wrote Djokovic. “I have booked my flight to Tokyo and will be a proud part of the Serbian Olympic team.”
Djokovic had recently questioned his start in Tokyo. It was “a 50:50 decision,” he said after he caught up with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal with his 20th Grand Slam triumph at Wimbledon. Federer and Nadal will be absent from the Tokyo Summer Games.
This means that Djokovic still has the opportunity to win the “Golden Slam”, i.e. all 4 Grand Slam tournaments and Olympic gold in the same year. The Serb triumphed at the Australian Open and the French Open before Wimbledon. The “Golden Slam” in professional tennis was only achieved by Steffi Graf in 1988.
