Exceptions possible – Ukrainian government bans art from Russia

These include works from Russia, Belarus and the Russian-occupied territories. Books from Russia have been subject to censorship in Ukraine since 2016. On Sunday, parliament decided that the music should be added by artists with Russian citizenship. In detail, a two-thirds majority voted in favor of the draft law, which stipulates that music by artists with Russian citizenship will be banned in public. The reason given is that this could have an effect on “separatist moods in the population”. Russian music would make it more attractive to adopt a Russian identity and aim to weaken Ukraine. However, the law provides for exceptions.
