When is the longest sports day of the year? On June 26th – and thus, as before the pandemic, on the last Sunday in June. Last year, the Ironman Frankfurt was postponed to August due to Corona, and the race had to be canceled completely in 2020. The competition still bears the addition “European Championship”, after all, the next European champion is mainly sought among the male professionals.

Many favorites around last year’s winner Patrik Nilsson

The race in Frankfurt next Sunday will decide: who will be the Ironman European Champion in 2022? Can last year’s winner Patrik Nilsson defend his title? Or is there perhaps a big surprise in the form of an underdog win? In addition to the equivalent of 71,000 euros in prize money (almost 24,000 euros for first place), three starting places for the Ironman World Championships in October in Hawaii are also at stake in Frankfurt. We’ll tell you at this point who the stars and favorites in the starting field are.

Special anniversary for the Ironman

The Ironman Frankfurt is going into its 20th edition this year and is thus celebrating a special anniversary. The first race took place on August 18, 2002, when three Germans, Lothar Leder, Jürgen Zäck and Uwe Widmann, finished in the first three places. Also in the following years there was a lot of black, red and gold on the podium, between 2014 and 2019 Sebastian Kienle and Jan Frodeno each won the race three times.

After an extended lap through the Langener Waldsee, the athletes switch to a 90-kilometer bike course, which leads through parts of Frankfurt and the Wetterau and is ridden twice. The final marathon extends over a so-called loop along both banks of the Main in Frankfurt City and has to be completed four times – up to the longed-for finish line on the Römerberg.
