Race Week! With the Ironman Frankfurt, one of the most traditional competitions of the triathlon year is coming up on Sunday. Here you will find all the important information about the live stream, route and traffic.
The Ironman Frankfurt is one of the biggest sports events in Germany and certainly one of the most popular in Hesse. Thousands of triathletes in different age and elite classes take to the track in and around Frankfurt on the longest sports day of the year. Hessischer Rundfunk (hr) will be broadcasting the Ironman live on various platforms again this year. We have summarized all important information for you here.
Ironman Frankfurt am 26. Juni
When is the longest sports day of the year? On June 26th – and thus, as before the pandemic, on the last Sunday in June. Last year, the Ironman Frankfurt was postponed to August due to Corona, and the race had to be canceled completely in 2020. The competition still bears the addition “European Championship”, after all, the next European champion is mainly sought among the male professionals.
Many favorites around last year’s winner Patrik Nilsson
The race in Frankfurt next Sunday will decide: who will be the Ironman European Champion in 2022? Can last year’s winner Patrik Nilsson defend his title? Or is there perhaps a big surprise in the form of an underdog win? In addition to the equivalent of 71,000 euros in prize money (almost 24,000 euros for first place), three starting places for the Ironman World Championships in October in Hawaii are also at stake in Frankfurt. We’ll tell you at this point who the stars and favorites in the starting field are.
Special anniversary for the Ironman
The Ironman Frankfurt is going into its 20th edition this year and is thus celebrating a special anniversary. The first race took place on August 18, 2002, when three Germans, Lothar Leder, Jürgen Zäck and Uwe Widmann, finished in the first three places. Also in the following years there was a lot of black, red and gold on the podium, between 2014 and 2019 Sebastian Kienle and Jan Frodeno each won the race three times.
In the women’s category, where the European Championship title is no longer awarded in Frankfurt, German and international winners alternated. Nina Kraft, Sandra Wallenhorst and the two Swiss athletes Caroline Steffen and Daniela Ryf each won the Ironman Frankfurt twice.
The Ironman Frankfurt in the live stream and on TV
The Hessischer Rundfunk (hr) will of course also broadcast the Ironman Frankfurt live in 2022 and report in detail on one of the most important competitions on the triathlon calendar. From 6.15 a.m. the hr television and the stream on hessenschau.de will be on the air with the “heimspiel! extra live”. In more than nine hours of live transmission, you will not miss a decision or important development along the route until the afternoon.
In the evening it will be really atmospheric again: From 9.45 p.m., hr-fernsehen will again be broadcasting live from Frankfurt’s Römerberg and will show the finishers of the last finishers and a summary of the professional race. On hessenschau.de we also offer you a live ticker from morning to afternoon.
The track at the Ironman Frankfurt
3.8 kilometers of swimming, 182 kilometers of cycling, 42.2 kilometers of running: it’s no wonder that the word “long” is included in the term long-distance triathlon. After an extended lap through the Langener Waldsee, the athletes switch to a 90-kilometer bike course, which leads through parts of Frankfurt and the Wetterau and is ridden twice. The final marathon extends over a so-called loop along both banks of the Main in Frankfurt City and has to be completed four times – up to the longed-for finish line on the Römerberg.

Contract extended: The Ironman stays in Frankfurt
Even before the starting gun is fired early on Sunday morning, one thing is clear: The 20th edition of the Ironman Frankfurt will by no means be the last. This makes it clear: This traditional long-distance triathlon will remain in the Main metropolis until at least 2026.
