The European Union will purchase 63 million euros worth of the virus-inhibiting drug remdesivir. The EU concluded a deal with drug manufacturer Gilead for this, a European Commission spokesperson said on Wednesday.
The purchased drugs can be used to treat about 30,000 corona patients. “From the beginning of August, lots of this medicine will be available to the Member States and the UK,” said the EC spokesperson.
The medicines will be delivered from August and then distributed to all Member States. Remdesivir is the only drug approved by the EU for the treatment of corona patients.
However, according to the EC spokesperson, the amount of medicines that are now being purchased is not large enough to treat patients for a longer period of time. “This first party will only meet immediate needs,” said the spokesman.
