Black summer of sexist crimes in Spain. In just one month, seven women have been murdered victims of gender violence. The figure rises to 40 women since the beginning of 2023 and 1,224 since 2003.
An unsustainable situation that has led the Ministry of Equality to convene this Monday the crisis committee for the evaluation of these last femicides confirmed by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence.
This is the second committee convened this summer, after last July Equality registered 8 murders of women at the hands of their partners or ex-partnerssome data that confirm that summer and holidays are moments of special risk due to the increase in coexistence.
The meeting, which will take place at 10 in the morning in the ministrywill have the participation of the different autonomous communities, in addition to the Department of Justice and the Prosecutor’s Office.
Seven women murdered in just one month
The first victim of sexist violence in the month of August was a 27-year-old woman slit her throat by her husband in the Pescadería neighborhood of Almería. The victim, who had not filed previous complaints for ill-treatment against her partner, had a daughter and two minor sons.
in 24 hours, Two more were added to this murder: that of a 31-year-old woman in Pozoblanco (Córdoba) and another 91-year-old in Valle Guerra (Tenerife).
In Madrid, another 50-year-old woman was murdered by her husband, while the fifth victim was a 39-year-old resident of Motril (Granada).
The last two women murdered at the hands of their partners or ex-partners met last Wednesday, when aA 36-year-old woman was murdered in the Salamanca municipality of Béjar and another of 58 was murdered by her ex-husband in Alzira (Valencia).
Equality crisis committee
The crisis committee is a measure launched in July 2022 that is convened in periods with a “high concentration” of sexist murdersthat is, five or more, or in those femicides in which circumstances of “special relevance” concur.
Since then, Equality has activated the crisis committee four times: in December 2022, after 11 women were murdered; in January 2023, after 8 femicides; last May, when 6 crimes were committed; and last month, in July, which registered 8 murders.
