A corona vaccination is a “contribution for yourself, but also for society as a whole”: With the end of free test offers, Bavaria’s Minister of Health Holetschek called on unvaccinated people to be immunized.
The Bavarian Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU) defended the end of the free corona tests and called on the population to vaccinate again. He said im Deutschlandfunk: “We now have the possibility of vaccination, then I think it is logical to say on the other side that we are reducing the free of charge for certain tests and that they are no longer billed at the expense of the solidarity community.” Vaccination is the way out of the pandemic, not testing.
With a view to autumn and winter, Holetschek emphasized that the pandemic was not over yet. He appealed to all unvaccinated people to get vaccinated in order to “make a contribution for themselves, but also for society as a whole”.
SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach also described the end of the free tests as correct. “It would be wrong to pay those who refuse the solidarity of vaccination unlimited solidarity for the tests,” said Lauterbach of the “Rheinische Post”.
Cities and districts welcome charges
The municipalities also welcome the move. “We do not assume that the discontinued free tests lead to serious social conflicts,” said the chief executive of the Association of Cities and Towns, Gerd Landsberg, the editorial network Germany (RND). “In view of a vaccination rate of 80 percent in adults, this is the right step,” said the President of the German District Association, Reinhard Sager, in the newspapers of the Funke media group.
Ministry defends expiry of free citizen tests
The Federal Ministry of Health defended the end of the free corona tests again. Everyone had the opportunity to protect themselves and get vaccinated. One could no longer expect citizen tests to be offered at the expense of the general public, said a spokeswoman. The head of department Jens Spahn (CDU) had already made a similar statement at the weekend. He spoke of “fairness to the taxpayer”.
The corona rapid tests, which have been free of charge for all citizens since spring, now mostly have to be paid for yourself. They generally remain free for people who cannot be vaccinated, including children under the age of twelve. The basis is a new federal regulation that came into force on Monday. Those who have Covid 19 symptoms still do not have to pay for the test.
