Electric newcomers like Tesla are pushing the old guard out of the US market

When you think of US cars, chrome-plated cruisers with bubbling V8 engines spring to mind. The US auto industry around General Motors (GM), Ford and Chrysler once set the pace not only in America but worldwide. «The Big Three» stood for progress, power and economic growth.

The example of GM shows that these good old days are over: For 80 years, GM was the largest car manufacturer in the world with brands such as Buick, Cadillac and Chevrolet and legendary models such as Eldorado, Malibu and Corvette. With around 4.4 million vehicles still produced, the former world number 1 only came in 6th place among the world’s leading car manufacturers last year – the current leader Toyota built more than twice as many cars as GM in 2021: just over ten million. Almost even worse for the proud Americans: After 90 years (!) as number 1, GM was overtaken by Toyota on its home market last year.
