‘Zahara with her Spelman sisters’, the actress writes with a photo of her daughter and a group of fellow students. ‘Congratulations to all students starting this year. It’s a very special place and it’s an honor that a family member now belongs to Spelman.’
Spelman is a so-called HBCU, which stands for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Founded before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended segregation, these educational institutions traditionally cater to students of African-American descent.
Jolie and then-husband Brad Pitt adopted Zahara in Ethiopia in 2005. The future student is the eldest daughter of the couple, who also have sons Maddox (20), Pax (18) and Knox (14) and daughters Shiloh (16) and Vivienne (14). Zahara leaves for her studies to the other side of America, but brother Maddox looked even further from home; he has been studying in South Korea for two years.
