As far as is known, a Dutch fighter has been killed in Ukraine for the first time since the start of the war in the Eastern European country. De Telegraaf writes this on the basis of “a representative” of the family and a message from the victim’s daughter that has since been deleted on social media.
It would be 55-year-old Ron Vogelaar, who served in the foreign legion of the Ukrainian army. When asked, the Vogelaar family does not want to respond to the message to the NOS.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it cannot confirm the man’s death. A spokesperson said a formal statement of the death is required, including the time of death. “In a war situation, it’s hard to say whether it will ever come.”
Vogelaar is said to have been killed by artillery fire last Wednesday near Molodova, east of the city of Kharkov. In the post on social media, according to De Telegraaf, his daughter wrote: “He was happy and he felt that he was in the right place. His commander said: ‘He died a hero’.”
