Dominik Eberle with a statement after leaving the Detroit Lions

Munich/Detroit – What started as one of the best days of his football career to date for Dominik Eberle ended as one of the worst.

After filling in for the injured Austin Seibert for the Detroit Lions, his hour should come. For the second time active at an NFL game. However, the game went awry, he missed two extra points and was partly responsible for the Lions trailing almost the entire game.

The result: The Lions released him on Tuesday.

Eberle belligerent: “It’s really just getting started”

Soon after, Eberle made a statement on Twitter. “No excuses, I just wasn’t good enough on Sunday,” said the man from Nuremberg. “It’s like that sometimes. Of course it’s disappointing and no one will deal with it harder than me.”

But the Utah State graduate is looking ahead: “I will hold my head high,” he promised in his statement. “This year has been one of the hardest of my life so far, with layoffs and illness, but it’s still going and all these events will only motivate me even more.” Earlier this year, he was fired from the Green Bay Packers with esophagitis before he could even compete for the starting job.

In the end, Eberle is combative: “No matter what comes, I’m always grateful for this path and everything I’ve been able to experience now, it’s really just getting started!”

The kicker is currently a free agent and can be accepted by any team. The Detroit Lions go to the New England Patriots on Sunday – unfortunately without Dominik Eberle.
