Digital Foundry: VRR technology on PlayStation 5 is inferior to Xbox Series X

Analysis Digital Foundry showed that variable refresh rate implementation (VRR) in PlayStation 5 inferior to that of the Xbox Series X and PC. This is mainly due to the lack of a low frame rate compensation function (LFC), which keeps the frame rate in the VRR range in case of drawdowns below the minimum value.

John Linneman and Alex Battaglia have tested a number of games, including some that don’t have official VRR support. One of them turned out to be Returnalbut something strange happened to her. Initially, the game received a patch with VRR, but subsequently, for some reason, the update was rolled back.

In its turn Insomniac Games could not disappoint. Their VRR patches for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales i Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart are capable of simulating LFC, however, in other projects, the frame rate may drop below the VRR range, which can lead to image judder.

Digital Foundry noted that Sony has opened up new possibilities for the console by adding this technology, but to achieve the level of Xbox Series X, LFC must be implemented system-wide. Now VRR on PS5 is much less flexible, which can and should change in the future, experts conclude.
