DICE wants to focus on Battlefield, cancels other projects

Battlefield-Developer DICE wants to be known for great first-person shooters. side projects like Mirror’s Edge are at a disadvantage.

Where are you going, SAY?

DICE General Manager Rebecka Coutaz recently answered a question about whether projects like Mirror’s Edge even exist. Your Answer: “Hardly. We’re just focusing on Battlefield 2042. There’s no time for anything else and that’s what we want to do. In three years, we want to be the first-person shooter super team that DICE deserves, and that’s what we want.” DICE has been around since the beginning of the Battlefieldseries primarily as Battlefieldstudio known. Since being acquired by EA in 2006, the company has worked almost exclusively on first-person shooters, including the Battlefieldseries, the multiplayer mode for Medal of Honor and the modern Star Wars Battlefront-Serie.

Die Mirror’s Edge-Games were probably the furthest away from this (success?) formula. While these are also first-person pistol-based games, they were about story-driven parkour adventures. While the original Mirror’s Edge from 2008 is still popular, its sequel could Catalyst (2016) didn’t make a splash and was the last non-FPS game to be released by DICE. Battlefield 2042 certainly did not meet the expectations of the players, Coutaz says: “We’re celebrating 30 years as a studio, but also 20 years on Battlefield, and we’ve got players that have been with us for 20 years and let them down…it’s really hard for us. I want the team to be really proud of Battlefield 2042. That’s what they hunt, and they put their heart and passion there. We want to be really, really proud of DICE.” Maybe with the next one Battlefield!
