From the very beginning of the pandemic, girls noted with horror one of the post-covid effects – hair loss. Scientists then said that there was no proven relationship between infection and hair thinning. Two years have passed, and hundreds of thousands of people are still worried that after recovering from a severe infection, they begin to rapidly go bald. Is there any new evidence on how covid is associated with hair loss and what can be done about it? Komsomolskaya Pravda talked about this with Anna Shchetinina, a dermatovenerologist at the Pirogov Center.

Diffuse hair loss, when the normal growth cycle is interrupted after suffering COVID-19, is a really common problem, says Anna Shchetinina.

“In fact, many factors provoke hair loss,” the expert continues. – The coronavirus here is only one of the reasons, and there is still no scientific confirmation of a direct relationship between the postponed coronavirus infection and hair loss.

If a person tolerates covid in a mild form, without hospitalization, without resuscitation and mechanical ventilation, and gets off, so to speak, with a slight fright and a temporary loss of smell, then, as a rule, nothing tragic happens to the hairstyle. This is also why it is so important to get vaccinated against covid on time – it is known that in a vaccinated person, in case of infection with a coronavirus infection, the disease proceeds, as a rule, in a mild and asymptomatic form. That is, in this way you can protect yourself from serious problems with your appearance.

EVEN LIGHT COVID IS NOT SAFE

– I am an example of that, – says Anna Shchetinina. – Kovid suffered easily and I had no problems with hair loss. But now doctors understand that light covid is not harmless. There is such a thing as a postform state. Even with a mild course of infection, there is, among other symptoms, a disorder in the functioning of the nervous system. Some patients have anxiety, some have depression and depression, and others may have panic attacks.

The severe form of coronavirus infection is a huge stress for the whole body. In order to save a person’s life, not one, not two, or even five potent drugs are used at the same time. And so for a long time, which greatly reduces all the resources of the body. Covid, being an infectious disease, causes a general thickening of the blood, which increases the risk of blood clots. The more the blood thickens, the less nutrients it contains, the less oxygen the organs, tissues and cells of the whole organism receive.

– The hair follicle is very sensitive to internal imbalances in the body and gradually begins to behave differently than we would like. Hair and grow dull, lose their strength, and fall out, – explains the doctor. – After suffering a coronavirus infection, hair loss increases, which are in the so-called telogen stage. This is the third phase of hair development, when it is still in the hair follicle on the surface of the skin, but its growth and development have already stopped. Hair loss occurs in the 3rd – 4th week after undergoing covid.

What should be done to restore hair growth after coronavirus?

1. Blood tests.

The first thing to do after an illness and in case you notice that hair is falling out more than usual is to assess the general condition of the body and its ability to recover. If your hair is falling out, then you should contact either a general practitioner or a dermatovenerologist.

– Dermatovenereologists take a course in trichology, on hair problems, so these are the specialists who can help you in the most qualified way, – says Anna Shchetinina. – And if the problem is not solved in any way, then the patient can be redirected to a very narrow specialist – a trichologist.

What’s the first thing to do? The doctor will direct you to donate blood for a general analysis and for a detailed biochemical blood test. Additionally, you need to check the safety of the thyroid gland, because it happens that thyroid hormones fall, and this causes a number of undesirable manifestations, one of which is hair loss.

2. Essential elements for good hair growth: zinc, magnesium, selenium, vitamin D.

If these minerals and vitamins are deficient, the doctor will prescribe appropriate medications. Most likely, B vitamins will also be shown to you.

– Vitamins of group B have a general strengthening effect and bring the nervous system to a normal state, – the doctor explains. – But you need to understand that this is a long-term treatment, designed for 3 – 4 months. As for vitamin D, its deficiency in Russia is very widespread, yet the lack of sunlight affects.

In our conditions, doctors prescribe prophylactic doses of Vitamin D all year round.

3. Plasma therapy shows good results for the treatment of postcoid hair loss.

– This procedure can be performed by a cosmetologist. This method is very good, because plasma produced from the blood of the person himself is used to restore the scalp. It is physiological and effective, says the doctor.

4. Mesotherapy. Zinc injectable cocktails.

– With this treatment, nutrients are immediately delivered to the place in the body where they are most needed, that is, to the scalp. This helps to stop hair loss faster and thereby also relieve the additional stress that girls experience especially strongly when they realize that thick braids are thinning literally day by day, says Anna Shchetinina.

As the best treatment option, the doctor recommends starting with blood tests, and then using plasma therapy and mesotherapy.

– These procedures can be alternated. This is how we create a depot of nutrients and trace elements directly in the scalp. As a rule, from 5 to 6 and up to 10 courses of treatment are prescribed. If the situation with hair loss is very difficult, and hair falls out in certain parts of the head, then, most likely, an intralesional injection of hormonal agents will be included in the treatment plan.

QUESTION WITH A RIB

– Anna Yurievna, the network has many options for how you can improve hair growth on your own. Among the popular methods are called scalp massage, and rubbing onion gruel, coffee, pounded hot pepper into it, which, in theory, promotes blood flow to the scalp. But how safe and effective are these methods?

– To a certain extent, it really works for a more intense blood supply to the scalp. However, in such cases, all stimulation occurs exclusively on the surface of the skin. Masks, creams, mashed herbal preparations – all this is not absorbed into the scalp so deeply as to systemically solve the problem. From the point of view of stimulating hair growth, we are interested in the middle layer of the skin, the dermis. Hair grows precisely from the dermal layer, and through the top layer of the skin – the epidermis – onion, garlic, pepper and other masks do not go deep. At best, you get nothing. And in the worst case – a skin burn, – says the doctor.

Scalp massage can be useful, but only in combination with the above treatment courses. Pulse massagers can be used as an additional stimulator of hair growth. These devices use heat and can be used while reading a book or watching TV, for example, in “sets” of 10 minutes. Nourishing masks can also be used, and it is better to those that the doctor will recommend to you, and not homemade ones, and definitely not “instead”, but “together” with the treatment.
