Dengue fever spread by sex during a world premiere

Spanish health authorities have confirmed the case of a man who was transmitting dengue sexually, a world first for a virus that until recently was supposed to be transmitted only by mosquitoes.

The case concerns a 41-year-old Madrid man who contracted dengue fever after having sex with his male partner, who contracted the virus during a visit to Cuba, during a visit to Cuba. a visit to Cuba, said Susana Jimenez from the public health department of the Madrid region.

His dengue infection was confirmed in September and this confused doctors because he had not traveled to a country where the disease, which causes severe flu-like symptoms, such as a high fever and aches, is common, she added.

"His partner had the same symptoms as him, but lighter about ten days earlier, he had already been to Cuba and the Dominican Republic," Jimenez said.

"An analysis of their sperm was carried out and revealed that not only were they suffering from dengue but that it was exactly the same virus that was circulating in Cuba."

A "probable" scientific case of sexual transmission of dengue between a man and a woman has been the subject of a recent scientific article in South Korea, said Jimenez.

In an email to AFP, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), which monitors health and illness in Europe, said it was "acting" to our knowledge, of the first sexual transmission of the dengue virus in men sex with men ".

According to the World Health Organization's website, dengue fever is mainly transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which lives in densely populated tropical climates and breeds in puddles of stagnant water.

This is very serious – and fatal – in children, especially young girls, although scientists do not know why.

Dengue fever is most often caught by people traveling in warmer climates such as Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, the Caribbean, South America and Central America.
