DeLorean Alpha5 does not parasitize the legendary DMC-12 from the Back to the Future trilogy – Wylsacom

The DeLorean Motors Company introduced the Alpha5 electric car. Yes, it came out under the DeLorean brand, which became famous in the legendary Back to the Future trilogy.

Of course, this Alpha5 cannot be called a full-fledged successor to the DMC-12. At least due to the fact that the DeLorean brand ceased to exist on October 26, 1982, when the company of the same name went bankrupt. And the current company was founded by Liverpool mechanic Stephen Wynn in 1995, when this brand, logo and the right to manufacture parts for the DMC-12 were bought.

The company planned to produce its own cars under the DeLorean brand. Production has been postponed several times. However, in the end, it seems that things will still come to the point that you can buy a brand new DeLorean.

A full-fledged presentation with a “live” concept will take place only in August. And now we can look at the renderings of the upcoming electric car.

Surprisingly, the designers decided to drop the references to the DMC-12. The only thing that can remind you of it is the huge “gull wings” that this car will also receive.

The appearance was developed by the design agency Italdesign. These doors are said to be the largest gullwings in existence. Given that they open access to two rows of seats at once, it is very easy to believe in this:

There is another reference – the rear window, decorated with a special aerodynamic grille, which was very fond of using in the 1980s:

Let’s just say it looks nice. Whether this has anything to do with the pre-existing DMC-12 is a question.

Little is known about the characteristics of the car. Now only the base model has been discussed.

For example, it can accelerate to 96 km/h (60 mph) in 3.4 seconds.

Top speed is limited at 241 km/h (150 mph).

And a range of 483 km (300 miles) over the not-so-realistic EPA cycle will be provided by a traction battery with a capacity of more than 100 kWh.

The drag coefficient is Cd 0.23. However, this is far from the best indicator, so the company should not be particularly proud of these figures. For example, the Mercedes-Benz EQS has a Cd of 0.20.

What else to say about this car? Nothing yet. All the information that is there has already been said.

A total of 88 DeLorean Alpha5s will be produced. 88 is, by the way, a reference to the movie Back to the Future. Production of the car will begin in 2024 in Italy.

How much each of the cars costs is unknown – the price may be announced in August, when the full presentation of this electric car will take place in Pebble Beach.

In general, the plans for the future of the new DeLorean are not bad. For example, after the sale of all 88 copies, the company is going to release a coupe with a classic V8 engine, then there will be an electric sedan and a large electric SUV. It will not do without restomod of the classic DMC-12. However, it is not known exactly when these cars will be presented.
