Christmas preparations have officially begun and people have already started buying gifts and thinking about decorations.
It is safe to say that the holiday season is extremely difficult for the bank balance. It is therefore important to take into account the change of date regarding the collection of the benefits you are owed – from pensions to family benefits to social assistance.
We've put together a list of everything you need to know so you do not get caught off guard.
The Christmas bonus
During the first week of December 2019, the Christmas bonus will be paid to pensioners and long-term asylum seekers.
Two weeks later, all clients paid weekly will receive a double payment, as explained below.
Offices of the Department of Social Protection
All offices of the Ministry of Social Welfare will be closed on Wednesday, December 25, Thursday, December 26, 2019 and Wednesday, January 1, 2020.
Banks and post offices
All Irish banks will be closed on Wednesday 25 December 2019 and will not reopen until Monday 30 December 2019.
(If your branch opens normally on a Saturday, it may open on December 28th).
Banks will also be closed on January 1, 2020
Post offices will close at 1 pm on December 24 and will not reopen until Friday, December 27, 2019. Post offices will also be closed on January 1, 2020.
There will be no delivery or collection of mail on December 25, 26 and 27, 2018.
Payments for people who are paid weekly and receive their payments at post offices
All persons who receive a weekly payment and collect their payments at post offices or are paid by check, will receive a double payment in the week of December 16th. This will be their normal weekly payment PLUS an advance / "double" payment for the following week.
There will be no "regular" weekly payments during the week beginning Monday, December 23, 2019.
All weekly payments due for encashment on Wednesday, January 1, 2020 will be cashed on Tuesday, December 31, 2019.
Benefits paid monthly for collection at post offices
Payments to be received on December 25 or 26 will be available on December 23.
Payments due for collection on December 27th will be available December 24th
Payments due on January 1, 2020 will be available on December 31, 2019
Payments of family allowances due for collection on Tuesday 7 will not be affected.
Payments for people who receive weekly payments directly into bank accounts
During the week beginning December 16, 2019 – all persons who are paid weekly in bank accounts – will receive their normal payment plus an advance payment for the following week. Payments will be made on the usual day.
There will be no weekly payments in the week of December 23, 2019
Payments due Monday, December 30, 2019 will be paid on Monday, December 23, 2019.
Payments due on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 will be paid on Monday, December 30, 2019.
Payments due on Wednesday, January 1, 2020 will be paid on Tuesday, December 31, 2019.
Normal payment terms will resume as of Thursday, January 2, 2020.
People who receive monthly payments in banks
The monthly payments due in the accounts on December 25th or 26th will be there on December 23rd
The monthly payments due in the accounts on December 27th will be there on December 24th.
Monthly payments due in the accounts on January 1, 2020 will be there on December 31, 2019
Casual job seekers
If you occasionally apply for a job seeker allowance or benefit, you will need to refer your roles for the signature weeks ending December 9th and 10th, December 17th and 18th, and December 24th and 25th at your Intreo Center. or local branch on or before. December 11, 2019.
When the slips are provided by that date, two payments covering the signature weeks ending on December 17 and 24 or December 18 and 25 will be deposited on the accounts on Friday, December 20th.
The usual payment terms for casual job seekers will resume as of Tuesday, January 7, 2020.
If you have opted for 2 lump sums, the second lump sum will be paid during the second week of January 2020.
