Cuban athletes who won medals at the Tokyo Olympics were awarded this January 12 with the delivery of Mercedes-Benz cars by the communist government, which controls the practice of sports in Cuba through the Institute of Sports and Physical Recreation (Inder).

The ceremony was attended by the president of Inder, Osvaldo Vento Montiller, and the national commissioner for active and retired athletes, Judith Águila Hernández. Both leaders agreed that the delivery of these cars in the current circumstances of the country is a gesture that demonstrates the government’s commitment to the athletes, who in turn have to be grateful to Fidel Castro.

“Appreciating this gesture, which has become a reality in the midst of difficult circumstances for the country, means recognizing once again the priority assigned to a sport that owes everything to the Revolution and its undefeated Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz,” said Águila Hernández.

There was also no lack of criticism of the United States government, highlighting “the effort made by the government” to deliver these cars amid the “impact of the Economic, Commercial and Financial Blockade of the United States government, and the application of 243 other measures coercive against our country.
