Crete shaken by series of earthquakes at the end of September
It was not until the end of September that the island was shaken by two severe earthquakes measuring 5.8 and 5.3. The first quake on September 27th claimed a human life and caused severe damage. Eleven people were injured and several residents had to be rescued from their collapsed houses.
The villages of Arkalochori, Patsideros and Viannos in the immediate vicinity of the epicenter of the earthquake around 20 kilometers south of the port city of Heraklion were particularly hard hit. Hundreds of old stone houses are said to have collapsed in the villages.
Several people had spent the following nights outdoors.
Why does the earth shake so often in Crete?
RTL meteorologist and geographer Björn Alexander: “In southeastern Europe, the African tectonic plate dips beneath the Eurasian plate. This immersion, also known as subduction, is a frequent trigger for earthquakes. Because the submergence does not happen evenly, but sometimes the various tectonic plates wedge and hook. It builds a tension arises, which can then discharge from time to time in entire series of earthquakes. “ Incidentally, this is reinforced by the fact that other tectonic plates or faults in the east (towards Turkey) can also be involved in the movements of the earth. Incidentally, different statements about the strength of earthquakes are quite common: “Often there is a gap between the information provided by the various seismological services Differences ranging from 0.1 to 0.2 in strength. “, so Alexander continues.
