Epicenter at Palekastro in eastern Crete

The Greek holiday island of Crete was shaken by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake at 12.24 p.m. on Tuesday. The epicenter was in the east of the island, near the village of Palekastro and about 100 kilometers east of the city of Heraklion. The focus of the earthquake was about 10 kilometers below the surface. According to witnesses, the earthquake was very strong and lasted several seconds.

Fire brigade in Crete and the neighboring islands on alert

The villages of Arkalochori, Patsideros and Viannos in the immediate vicinity of the epicenter of the earthquake around 20 kilometers south of the port city of Heraklion were particularly hard hit. Hundreds of old stone houses are said to have collapsed in the villages.
