Creative and underpaid: more and more artists in Basel

The number of cultural workers has risen by 30 percent across Switzerland. The increase harbors risks of precarization, as even the Federal Office for Culture says.

Actresses, musicians or visual artists: there have probably never been so many creative artists in Basel as there are today. 2541 people worked in cultural professions in the city canton in 2021. This is shown by figures from the Federal Statistical Office. The increase is enormous. From 2011 to 2021 alone, the number of creative artists in the narrower sense rose by a whopping 30 percent – nationwide.
