Crazy instruments (4/7) – Samsonite Orchestra, the world in a suitcase
– Samsonite Orchestra, the world in a suitcase
For more than 15 years, the Genevan musician Julien Israelian has traveled to the antipodes with his bizarre thing.
Its name: Samsonite Orchestra. Like the brand of wheeled suitcases that are dragged through airports.
His own, Julien Israelian has never lost it, neither in New York, nor in Japan, nor anywhere else in the world where he has been transporting it for almost fifteen years, most often to play it solo. Normal, it’s still his hand luggage. The Geneva musician actually collects them, only models from the 1950s, in wood. Heavier than the plastic version, more attractive with their marble finish.
In the suitcase, Julien Israelian has tinkered with a kind of guitar, strings stretched between nut and bridge, which the soloist stretches as he pleases, creating subtle melodies.
Microphones, piezo, effects pedals and looper to record sound loops complete the picture. With an architect’s lamp, useful for lighting, also as percussion. Here, it is worth remembering that Julien Israelian, renowned multi-instrumentalist, is also a leading drummer.
“I wanted to offer ambient and groove but artisanal.”

The first Samsonite Orchestra was born in 2005, when Geneva bars were transformed into lounge areas with DJs. “I wanted to offer ambient and groove but artisanal.” Over the years, the device has evolved. Today, its designer is looking for an “augmented natural” sound.
Chance of the calendar, the Samsonite Orchestra will be out on Saturday July 30, at the Bateau Genève, at 10 p.m. In the company of fakir Lalla Morte, who will also arrive in a suitcase…
