Covid pill molnupiravir as a new beacon of hope

The daily number of new corona infections has recently increased again. The drug molnupiravir is now a new hope in the fight against the virus.

the essentials in brief

  • The antiviral drug molnupiravir is in phase 3 clinical trials.
  • The pill is said to work better than the well-known remdesivir.

Remdesivir was the first drug against Covid-19 to be approved by the US FDA. However, its effectiveness is controversial.

Now there is a new hope in the fight against the coronavirus: Molnupiravir. This orally taken Covid pill is currently going through phase 3 of clinical tests.

In a study published in the journal “Nature”, scientists from the University of Würzburg and the Max Planck Institute write: “The available data indicate that molnupiravir acts as a mutagenic agent that causes a ‘catastrophe of errors’ during viral replication.”

The replication of the nucleic acid molecules as the carrier of the virus in the lung tissue is thus inhibited. In animal experiments with ferrets, the drug Sars-Cov-2 blocked.
