Corona: Where the Delta variant is spoiling our summer holidays

The delta mutant is threatening your summer vacation at these destinations

This article is also available in French. Read it now!

From Saturday there are summer holidays in many cantons in Switzerland. But the increase in the number of corona cases at popular holiday destinations and especially the spread of the delta variant are worrying Swiss holidaymakers.

The number of cases is rising at the following ten summer destinations frequently visited by Swiss people. They were sorted according to the increase in the number of cases compared to the previous week. In some places, however, these are still at a low level. For each country you will find a classification of the number of cases in text form:

Greece +97%

  • Number of cases in the last 7 days: +16’758
  • 7 day incidence: 156 per 100,000 inhabitants
  • Impfquote; 89 doses administered per 100 inhabitants
  • Delta-Variant: Not proven (yet)

A second wave is looming in Greece. Cases have grown exponentially in the past few weeks and the incidence has now risen to 156. The vaccination rate is relatively high. There are fears that the delta variant is already spreading but has not yet been sequenced.

France +88%

  • Number of cases in the last 7 days: +32’390
  • 7 day incidence: 50 to 100,000 inhabitants
  • Impfquote; 89 doses administered per 100 inhabitants
  • Delta-Variant: 28 percent of the cases

In Western Europe, too, the numbers are increasing again in various places. In our western neighbor France, the number of cases does not seem to decrease anymore, but to increase again. The 7-day incidence has now risen to 50, but the number of cases is still far from those of the waves in October and April. The delta variant is also widespread here.

Italy +75%

  • Number of cases in the last 7 days: +10’132
  • 7 day incidence: 17 per 100,000 inhabitants
  • Impfquote; 98 doses given per 100 inhabitants
  • Delta-Variant: 48 percent of the cases

In Italy the cases rose only slightly at first, now they are growing again exponentially. However, the incidence is still at a rather low level. The vaccination rate in our southern neighbor is good, but the delta variant is also spreading here.

Morocco +70%

  • Number of cases in the last 7 days: +10’020
  • 7 day incidence: 27 per 100,000 inhabitants
  • Impfquote; 55 doses administered per 100 inhabitants
  • Delta-Variant: 25 percent of the cases

A second wave is looming in Morocco as well. However, it should be noted here that the test rates are relatively low and that the delta variant is not reliably sequenced. Compared to the number of cases, the death rate is much higher here than in the other countries.

Albania +64%

  • Number of cases in the last 7 days: +59
  • 7 day incidence: 2 per 100,000 inhabitants
  • Impfquote; 35 doses given per 100 inhabitants
  • Delta-Variant: no data

In Albania the numbers have increased in the last few days. The growth is still taking place at a very low level, but the vaccination rate is low, which means that large parts of the population are not protected against the virus. There are currently no data on the distribution of the delta variant in Albania.

Mexico +50%

  • Number of cases in the last 7 days: +58’458
  • 7 day incidence: 45 per 100,000 inhabitants
  • Impfquote; 38 doses given per 100 inhabitants
  • Delta-Variant: 73 percent of the cases

In Mexico, the number of cases and the incidence are steadily increasing. Here, too, the spread of the delta variant is likely to contribute to this development. The vaccination quota is – proportionally – also at a low level.

Thailand +47%

  • Number of cases in the last 7 days: +63’985
  • 7 day incidence: 92 per 100,000 inhabitants
  • Impfquote; 18 doses given per 100 inhabitants
  • Delta-Variant: 48 percent of the cases

In Thailand the numbers are also increasing significantly. There was hardly any testing here for a long time. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 60,000 new cases have been added in the last few days. In total, however, only around 370,000 cases have been reported to the WHO so far. Here, too, the numbers should be interpreted with caution. Nevertheless, it can be said that a real corona wave is looming in Thailand.

Indonesia +44%

  • Number of cases in the last 7 days: +309’015
  • 7 day incidence: 113 per 100,000 inhabitants
  • Impfquote; 19 doses given per 100 inhabitants
  • Delta-Variant: 94 percent of the cases

In Indonesia, the number of cases has risen massively over the past few weeks. At the moment, the daily number of cases is at a record level. In total, around 2.7 million cases have been reported in the very populous island state. Eleven percent (i.e. the 309,015) of them in the last seven days alone. Here, Delta has already established itself as the dominant variant and the vaccination rate is very low compared to Europe.

Spain +36%

  • Number of cases in the last 7 days: +128’023
  • 7 day incidence: 270 to 100,000 inhabitants
  • Impfquote; 104 doses administered per 100 inhabitants
  • Delta-Variant: 82 percent of the cases

In Spain, the delta mutation in particular is causing a rapid increase in the number of cases. A large number of cases can be traced back to this highly contagious variant. The incidence skyrocketed to 270 in the past few weeks.

Portugal +25%

  • Number of cases in the last 7 days: +20’533
  • 7 day incidence: 199 per 100,000 inhabitants
  • Impfquote; 102 doses administered per 100 inhabitants
  • Delta-Variant: 89 percent of the cases

In Portugal, the situation is similar to that in Spain: Here, however, the delta variant has already made up 89 percent of the new cases. The number of new infections rose slowly at first, but has increased more rapidly since last week.
