According to an independent commission of inquiry, there have been thousands of pedophiles in the Catholic Church in France since 1950.

Investigations into the abuse scandal in the church have shown that since then there have been between 2,900 and 3,200 pedophile priests or other pedophile church members, the head of the investigative commission, Jean-Marc Sauvé, told the AFP news agency before the publication of a corresponding report, which is scheduled for Tuesday.

Figures are “minimum estimates”

“It’s a minimal estimate,” said Sauvé. This is based on archive material from the church, the judiciary, the police and the press, as well as on testimony from witnesses. The number is in relation to a total of 115,000 priests or ecclesiastical dignitaries in the period from 1950 to 2020 in the Catholic Church of France.

The Commission of Inquiry (Ciase) presented its report on Tuesday after two and a half years of intensive research. This comprises a total of 2,500 pages. He shows the extent of the cases in the Catholic Church and compares this with sexual assault in other institutions such as sports clubs or schools as well as in the family environment. The “institutional and cultural mechanisms” that made the deeds possible were also examined. Measures to prevent such offenses in the future are also proposed.
