The United States Consulate in Chengdu was officially closed on Monday morning, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced in a statement. This move comes after the United States closed the Chinese consulate in Houston, Texas last week. CNN’s David Culver is in Chengdu as diplomatic staff work hastily to move in over the weekend and as local people form a small crowd outside the consulate to take selfies and capture this historic moment. CNN talks to a Chinese student affected by the closure – this used to be a consulate known for issuing student and academic visas – and to an expert on US-China relations who describes the long-term impact that some experts already label as a “New edition of the Cold War”.
