Sophie Marceau (55) raves about her breakthrough
“I still love ‘La Boum'”
She was once a teenage idol, then the Bond antagonist: Sophie Marceau reveals at the Locarno Film Festival how she chooses her roles.
One of the highlights of this year’s Locarno Film Festival is the film “Une femme de notre temps” – starring Sophie Marceau (55). An extraordinary role for the French actress, which almost everyone remembers from the teenage film “La Boum” (1980). In the new film, Marceau plays Juliane, a police inspector in Paris with great moral integrity. But when she discovers her husband’s double life, she begins to commit acts that she would never have believed herself capable of.
How do you like Locarno?
Sophie Marceau: What can I say, it’s gorgeous. It’s my first time here in the region, unfortunately I can only stay for two days. I wish I could spend more time in Locarno.
You became a star at the age of 13 thanks to «La Boum». Does it never annoy you when people ask you about the film today?
No, not at all, this film was the start of my career. I still love «La Boum». Even if I prefer other topics today.
What has changed since «La Boum»?
A lot and yet nothing. Everything has to go faster, all news is immediately on social media. Today a film is shot in six weeks, in the past twelve weeks were planned for it. But I kind of like it, it’s my nature.
What criteria do you use to decide on a role?
If I have to think about it for too long, it’s usually not the right thing. It’s like walking into a store and thinking long and hard about buying something. In this case, better leave it alone.
Your new film “Une femme de notre temps” is anything but light fare. How much of you is in the role of Julienne?
I love the woman I play. She stands up for her rights. She is direct, honest, radical and doesn’t fool anyone. There’s a lot of my own character in there. But that doesn’t mean that I approve of killing the husband as a betrayed wife like in the film.
What is your advice to young actors?
I’ve often heard: “You’re beautiful, you’re talented.” Yes, that may be true, but so are millions of others. To become a successful actress you have to work, watch movies and study a lot. That’s the most important.
