In the Corona crisis, aviation is only slowly getting back on its feet, especially on long-haul routes. The battle between the airlines is all the greater, as an example from China shows. The Chinese punish foreign airlines if they bring Covid-19 infected people into the country. This is reported by the airline portal Aerotelegraph.
The punishments are as simple as they are severe. If the aircraft has between five and nine infected travelers on board, the airline in question is no longer allowed to fly the route for two weeks. The Chinese authorities block a route for four weeks if a foreign airline flies ten or more passengers who have tested positive to China.
Eleven Swiss flights affected
“As a result of passengers who tested positive at their destination, Swiss were also deprived of their traffic rights for individual flights on the Zurich-Shanghai and Zurich-Hong Kong routes,” says a Swiss spokeswoman for Blick.
A total of 11 flights were affected in 2020 and 2021, six to Hong Kong and 5 to Shanghai. “These flights were carried out from Switzerland as pure cargo flights, passengers were only transported on the return flight,” the spokeswoman continues.
Germans fight back
As Aerotelegraph writes, it has already hit various airlines. Including the Swisss, as well as Lufthansa, Condor and Austrian Airlines. The German government is now resisting. Because she doubts that there are really health-political reasons behind the measure. The suspicion: China wants to treat its own airlines privileged in difficult times.
If China blocks a Lufthansa or Condor route, Germany now simply does the same. Because: China’s measures would distort competition. France too has had enough of the Chinese route closures. For this reason, Germany and France are also making representations in Beijing. (pbe)
