Diabetes patient Lennart Michels: ‘Sweets can actually save my life’

More than 100,000 Dutch people have type 1 diabetes, and yet much about this phenomenon is unclear or unknown. Sometimes also for patients or practitioners themselves. For example, few people are familiar with the dead-in-bed syndrome, in which patients are found dead in bed due to low blood sugar. According to diabetes patient Lennart Michels (30), there are also misunderstandings: “People think I shouldn’t have sweets, but sweets can actually save my life.”
