“The huge amount of new cases, encountering too large a susceptible population, is progressively saturating the hospitals. Consequently, many regions are heading towards the orange zone by the end of the month“. These are the words of the president of the Gimbe Foundation, Nino Cartabellotta, intervened on Tg News, on Cusano Italia Tv.
Interviewed by the director of the broadcaster, Gianluca Fabi, Cartabellotta explains the data of the weekly Gimbe monitoring, which show all the indicators of the epidemic in sharp rise, and explains the apparent contradiction between the lesser aggressiveness of the variant Omicron and the hospitals currently full: “We are facing an extremely contagious variant. The problem is that this very high number of cases encounters a susceptible population that is still too large. We have 2 million and 200 thousand children under 5 who still cannot vaccinate, 8 million and 600 thousand people not vaccinated in all age groups and 15 million people waiting for the third dose. This means that in fact we are progressively filling hospitals, both in the medical area and in intensive care ”.
On the measures dethe Draghi government, Cartabellotta observes: “The vaccination is proceeding well. Excluding a small delay on third doses in the first part of autumn, this executive cannot be blamed for anything. However, apart from trusting the population and putting on the obligation of FFP2 masks, in fact restrictive measures to curb the growth of infections have not been introduced and therefore the cases, with such a contagious variant, continue to grow. The question that everyone is asking is: gWill hospitals be able to withstand this pressure in the next few weeks? We already have a very critical hospital situation “.
Finally, the president of the Gimbe foundation pronounces on the proposal invoked by the Regions on no longer counting asymptomatic positives: “The real problem is that when a person arrives at the hospital and is positive, they have to be managed in a covid ward. We have not set up some sort of intermediate assistance for which the patient may have to go for hip replacement surgery and is occasionally identified as positive. Today – he concludes – the system provides that, when a patient enters the hospital and takes a positive swab, he automatically ends up in a covid ward, regardless of the symptoms.the. Therefore, a modification of the rules is needed which, on the one hand, can reduce the percentages of employment and save the Regions from the orange and red zone, but on the other hand, it does not solve the problem of hospital overload, because these people still go to hospital. Therefore, let us not confuse the bureaucratic aspect with that of the occupation of hospitals”.
