There are around 536,940 doctors in Germany. In order for health care to be guaranteed for all citizens, however, young people are also needed. For medical students there is now a new training methodwhich should allow them to gain more experience.

Work on the hologram: Training at Addenbrooke’s Hospital

Good doctors require extensive specialist knowledge; but experience is just as important. This does not necessarily have to be collected from test objects, like Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge exemplifies it. A new technique is used here: the work on the hologram. This means that students do not learn from test objects or people, but from holograms that suffer from an illness in the simulation. This hospital is worldwide the first to use hologram technology to train doctors.

The task of the British students is to examine the patients in the simulation. The first hologram patients are on asthma, anaphylaxis, pulmonary embolism or inflammation sick. Then you have to treat them. The advantage: the students can practice on them without harming a living person and gain their first important experiences.

The next step is towards the cardiology and neurology go: Students of the teaching hospital should soon be able to practice on holograms who have cardiovascular and nervous diseases.

The training system and its advantages

When working, the students must Mixed-Reality-Headset wear. This enables them to see both the hologram, i.e. their patient, and their fellow students in the room. The training system used is also called HoloScenarios.

According to the developers, the training of the students through this technology should on the one hand more flexible succeed, but at the same time cheaper. Simulations have been used in the training of doctors for decades. So far, there have been special simulation laboratories or actors are used to ensure the students have the necessary experience; the effort and costs of maintaining these laboratories are usually higher than with the new training system.

The teaching hospital uses a new technology that will could be implemented in other hospitals. Mixed reality is increasingly seen as a useful method, so that more and more teaching hospitals could switch to it when training their doctors. Exactly how the technology will spread is currently not foreseeable.

A new technique could be a problem for many teaching hospitals new and innovative approach be in order to offer the students more practical experience. According to the developers, this is an advantage lower costs of training. The extent to which the technology will spread over the next few years is to look forward to with excitement.
