04 September 2023 Maurizio Landini in Vercelli at the demonstration organized by the trade unions after the massacre in Brandizzo, in the Turin area, where five workers lost their lives when hit by a train. “Unacceptable deaths, it is the system of contracts and subcontracts that does not work and must be changed”, says the general secretary of the CGIL. “What has happened here is an issue that does not only concern the railways, but also the construction and maintenance system”, adds the union leader. “As long as safety is considered a cost and not instead an investment or a social bond, it is clear that these situations will not change”, continues Landini. “The government – said the number one of the CGIL – has liberalized subcontracting in a country that has millions of investments ahead of it precisely for maintenance”.
