Unless something crazy happens, Nevada will be heading to consecutive bowl games, although it's not official until Sunday afternoon. There are 79 bowl-eligible teams for 78, but the Wolf Pack's seven wins give it a playoff spot despite Mountain West having seven bowl-eligible teams for five draws with the bowl. So where will Nevada go? Here are the latest projections on interwebs, with my projections below.
Jerry Palm from CBS Sports: Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs. Miami (Ohio)
Kyle Bonagura of ESPN: New Mexico Bowl vs. UAB
Mark Schlabach of ESPN: Arizona Bowl against Georgia Southern
Brett McMurphy from the stadium: Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs. Miami (Ohio)
USA Today's Erick Smith: Cheez-It Bowl against the State of Washington
Steven Lassan from Athlon: Famous bowl of potatoes from Idaho against Ohio
University Football News: New Mexico Bowl vs Southern Miss
Mountain West Wire: Arizona Bowl against Georgia Southern
247Sports.com: New Mexico Bowl vs Southern Miss
Bleacher's report: Arizona Bowl against Georgia Southern
Of the 10 projections above, there are three votes each for the Arizona, New Mexico and Idaho potato bowls, plus one for the Cheez-It bowl. This seems logical, as it even seems that Nevada ends in Boise, Albuquerque or Tucson, who are tied for the last three bowls of the MW this season. The Cheez-It Bowl, located in Phoenix, is interesting because this bowl opposes Pac-12 to the Big 12, which has only six teams eligible for the bowl and seven assists in the bowl. at least one of these games. The Cheez-It Bowl is ranked sixth out of seven Big 12s (the First Responder Bowl is seventh), so there is a good chance that a MW team will end up in Phoenix. The Dallas-based Frisco Bowl is also an option, as it pits an American Athletics Conference team against the general with MW as an alternate partner. The AAC has seven spots for teams of seven teams, but is online to get the slot machine of the New Year's Group Five and would end up with a team short of filling his bowls. Finally, the Redbox Bowl in San Francisco is an option. The WM has entered into a safeguard agreement in this bowl, which pits Big 10 against Pac-12. Both conferences have the exact number of bowl teams for bowl seats, so it seems unlikely that a team of MW will get that bowl.
Projections of Murray's MW bowl
Las Vegas Bowl: Boise State
Famous bowl of potatoes from Idaho: State of Utah
Bowl of the Armed Forces: Aviation
Hawaii Bowl: Hawaii
Arizona Bowl: Wyoming
Cheez-It Bowl: State of San Diego
New Mexico Bowl: Nevada vs. Southern Miss December 21, Resume Hawaii Bowl 2011
I do not see Nevada going to the Arizona Bowl for the second season in a row and the third time in four years. It would be silly when New Mexico and Famous Idaho Potato are open. My guess is that the famous Idaho Potato Bowl is taking hold of Utah State or Wyoming, which would be better at the game. Utah State has not played in the famous Idaho Potato Bowl since 2015 and hosted Boise State this season. So he did not visit Boise in 2019. That suits perfectly. That brought me to play in Nevada in the New Mexico Bowl. The two potential curves are if Hawaii beats Boise State in the MW title game (and thus plays in the Las Vegas Bowl) or Boise State gets the slot crack of the New Year's bowl of the Group of 5 (which would require Cincinnati to beat Memphis in the AAC title game). If one of these two things happened, there would be a reshuffle. But if Boise State and Memphis win on Saturday, I guess Nevada will head to Albuquerque for its first New Bowl since 2012, which was Chris Ault's last match as a Nevada coach.
